What is a classic massage
The term “classic massage” refers to a mechanical, usually manual influence on the skin, the deeper tissue (fascia) and the muscles. Classic massage is mainly used to prevent and treat diseases of the musculoskeletal system.
How can a classic massage help
The classic massage helps with problems of the musculoskeletal system, such as tension or muscle pain. But massage treatment is also very popular for migraines, headaches, psychological tension, restlessness, and stress reduction.
The depicted image (copy used from the book Rückenreparatur by Stuart McGill) illustrates beautifully, how muscles connect to the spine and the consequences, when these muscle groups are imbalanced eg. through injuries, over or under training of specific muscle groups, bad posture etc. This will likely lead to back pain.
A fully trained massage therapist can certainly help alleviate pain, especially when combined with the appropriate back training exercises.
What to expect
During a classic massage, pressure and pulling stimuli are applied to the muscles and their surrounding tissue. The effect takes place directly locally by stretching and relaxing muscles and stimulating blood circulation and cell metabolism. This will relieve pain in the affected area. Fascia treatment can also lead to the desired goal.
If the masseur provides faster stimuli, the tissue and muscles are stimulated and optimally prepared for upcoming stress. This principle is used, for example, in sports and is usually referred to as “sports massage”.
What is the effect of a classic massage?
It has a positive effect on the entire organism and thus promotes the patient’s well-being and relaxation. In detail, skin and cell metabolism, blood, and lymph flow, as well as blood circulation in the muscles and the formation of synovial fluid are stimulated. The elasticity of ligaments and tendons is improved, and muscular imbalances are harmonized. This leads to relief from pain, a reduction in heart rate and blood pressure as well as deeper breathing and thus psychological relaxation.
Possible reactions after a massage treatment would include a feeling of muscle soreness or heaviness, fatigue, stiffness, mild pain, or a slight pulling sensation in the massaged area for 24 to 48 hours after treatment.
